The Five Bells
High Street, Cople, Bedford, Bedfordshire
Witnesses have seen a ghost is this pub to smoke a clay pipe. He wears his hair in a pigtail. Customers with staff have seen the ghost of a sailor many times, as he sits by the fireplace. Sightings of this maritime spectre are such a common occurrence; it is of no surprise to those who see him. The 400 years old, Five Bells is at the centre of the village, opposite the church. The pub derived its name from when the parish church had five bells. Although that church now has six bells, the pub has kept its original name. Some Five Bells pubs are after the nautical term when five bells meant the end of a mid-day watch.
