Sow and Pigs
19 Church Square, Toddington, Dunstable, Bedfordshire
For a small town, there are a large number of pubs. There are seven in all. Most are close to the old Market Place. Toddington records as having more pubs per head of population than any other town in the UK. The curious inn name, it is derived from a 17th century card game, My Sow’s Pigg’d. Locals claim it was popular with farmers with agricultural workers. For many years, that was the name of the pub. The game seems to have disappeared early in the 19th century. The present building has all the appearance of having been a previous coaching inn and exhibits ghostly manifestations. These include a man wearing a cloak. Reports claim it to be the ghost of a coachman who died in an accident here many years ago. Apparently, another coach entering the stable yard had hit him
