Lady Elizabeth Grey drowned in a coaching accident near this public house in the 18th century. Although a member of the de Grey family, earls of Kent, she met with fell in love with a young coachman working from this inn. As her father did not approve of such a relationship, she hid at the inn for two weeks in a desperate attempt to keep her love alive. However, her father found where she was in hiding with went to bring her home. As Elizabeth and her lover were fleeing, their coach crashed into a lake drowning the occupants. Her grey form, previous licensees claim, appeared at the pub many times. In 1959, ghostly occurrences troubled the proprietor at the time. She invited an exorcist to help her. However, this was to no avail, as the ghost has continued to haunt the inn by continuously slamming doors. An apparently solid figure of a man, witnesses saw, at the inn. However, this was to suddenly dissolve with disappear. One worker at the Old George saw a young woman, dressed in a grey frock, with wearing an impressive hat stroll past. From his description, it was that of Lady Elizabeth Grey.
