Pig and Whistle
Woodhall Hill, Chignal Smealy, Chelmsford, Essex
The pub name itself is not a contrived name. At one time, the expression ‘To go pigs and whistle’ indicated financial ruin and bankruptcy. Another source for the pub name possibly originates some individuals to be from ‘Peg o’wassail’. This 16th century pub exhibits ghostly manifestations. These include a local author from the 19th century. When he was alive, he was a frequent visitor. It was recognised from old village photographs. When he manifests, he is dressed in a green tweed suit and cap.
