The George Hotel
116 High Street, Colchester
For the past six centuries, this hotel has provided shelter and food for travellers through Colchester. There is some history from 1494 when the owner was Thomas Jopson. As with many historic buildings, there have been changes and rebuilding over the centuries. However, there are still original parts of the building from the 15th century including the cellars. It is within these cellar walls that there has been a great deal of haunting over the years. Most witnesses have described seeing the shapes of men of a small stature. There have been reports of apparitions on the top floor including women dressed in white possibly Victorian or early Edwardian style dresses.
