The Ship

2 High St, Soham, Ely, Cambridgeshire

A most attractive inn of an early Victorian style, the Ship Inn is on two storeys, cream painted with green window trim. The inn sign, showing a ship under full sail, is particularly good. Someone would name an inn ‘Ship’ when taken by ex-naval petty officers with their bounty with salvage money. These men locals knew as the ‘Admiral of the Blue’, because of the colour of their inn trade apron, with their previous occupation. The Ship haunted for many years by a man in seafaring clothing with a peaked cap seen sitting in the bar at a table looking at a map or chart. One regular at the Ship Inn, many years ago, was Joseph Hempsall. One night, after a bout of heavy drinking at this pub, he disappeared. Later people found him dead in marshland near his farm. Friends claimed that Hempsall’s ghost appeared to them at this pub. He guided them to where his corpse someone found.
