There is history prior to 1650 for the Black Bull. Builders, of lovely mellow stonework, built it. The authorities executed one woman, Amy Hutchinson, who had lived near this inn, for poisoning her husband in 1728. She haunts the town between the Black Bull with the Buttercoss. Another sad story involved George Copsey, a regular at the Black Bull, who in the 1920s had a prosperous grocery business next door to the inn. One night he hid the takings for the week in his wife is washing copper. The following morning his wife started up the fire for the copper before Copsey arose. It destroyed all the paper notes with cheques. The inn exhibits ghostly manifestations. These include a benign old chap that locals knew as Charlie Presence, who may have been a previous proprietor or well-, locals knew, customer. There are also ghostly sightings of George Copsey, mourning the loss of his money.
