The Chequers Inn
Little Bretton March Road, Friday Bridge, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire
Over three centuries ago, a number of men held all night card games at the Chequers. One died, with the others decided to hold a last game over his body when it rested in the church before burial. They were playing by the light of a candle when they were struck by lightning and all died. Since then their ghosts have roamed the Chequers Inn with some degree of moaning. In addition, something a little more credible haunts it. That is the sight and sound of children running up and down and laughing in a corridor. After mirrors have been cleaned and polished, the imprint of a small child’s hand frequently appears on the surface.
