Every year on March 17th, the pub keeps a vigil for the ghost of Juliet Tousley, a young girl whose spirit still roams this riverside inn. She died from a broken heart when a love affair with Tom Zoul forlornly ended. This inn has been on the site for over 1,000 years. It is very probably the oldest in the country. It was, at one time, a monastic ferry house with hospice for local monks with pilgrims. Consequently, it was commonplace for such buildings to become inns. Now, once a year, a vigil for Juliet grants a special licence. Witnesses have seen her ghost to enter the pub. She points to a flagstone, where locals think her restless body lies. There is some evidence that this pub has been here since AD 560, although the first documents available are from 1100. This is probable, as there was a ferry across the river used by the Roman soldiers with local travellers. There is a holy well nearby where lepers with others afflicted with illness or crippling disease came to drink the miracle waters in the medieval period in search of a cure.
