The Chequers Inn
St. Mary's Street, Eynesbury, St Neots, Cambridgeshire
A 16th century inn with contemporaneous features of wooden beams inside, the Chequers is possibly the oldest building in the village. A blessed miracle took place at Eynesbury in 1853, when a woman, blind for 20 years, with living close to the Chequers, fell downstairs. The shock returned her sight. She appears to have been so ungrateful because she has taken up residence at the Chequers as a phantom. Another ghost is that of a local witch, Nanny Izzard. Witnesses have seen her flying her broomstick in the skies over the Chequers Inn. There have been reports over the years of her appearing in the pub as a black shape with a malevolent face.
