The ghost of King Edmund of East Anglia haunts the outside of this 15th century pub. He was escaping from the Danes after the Battle of Hoxne in AD 870, with hid underneath the village bridge. A couple, recently wed, were passing over that bridge. They saw the glint of his spurs in the water. They told the pursuing Danish soldiers where he was concealed, with King Edmund was captured. Before he the authorities executed, he placed a curse on all bridal couples who ever crossed the bridge. Edmund was beaten, tortured and shot through with arrows before being beheaded for refusing to renounce Christ. On moonlit nights, his spurs glint through the water.
