Queen Victoria

The Common, Happisburgh, Norfolk

Built over 300 years ago, this pub was the centre of smuggling, with there is legend of a mad spectre in the village. When it appears, there is a body of a man without legs and his head hanging down over his chest. The apparition leaves the Queen Victoria and strides out to sea, carrying a large bundle. It then returns, with disappears into the ground at Well Corner. For several nights, local people watched this apparition throw articles down the well and they decided to search it by daylight. They found a large sack with a man’s body in it. Legend has it that the body in the bag, now haunting this pub, was a smuggler who came to an untimely end at the cutlasses of his enemies.
