The Waggon and Horses
19 Church Street, Steeple Morden, Royston, Hertfordshire
This cosy 17th century inn nestles opposite the historic church in the picturesque village setting of Steeple Morden. Since 1750, there have been stories of the ghost of a murdered woman wandering through the village wringing her hands. Witnesses report her to have been Elizabeth Pateman, who had lived at the pub as either proprietor or a servant. Locals knew a farmer with his wife to have murdered her, although the authorities brought no one to justice for the crime. The pub name is after the village waggons, which moved between villages with towns carrying trade goods with passengers.
