Several figures emerge from a cellar clothed in the brown habits of monks at this riverside pub. The terrifying image is compounded by their being visible only from the knees up. This group of phantoms traverse the bar and sit at a table close to the fireplace. There they remain for several minutes, before dissolving away. A poltergeist is also in residence, spiriting keys from a bar top and leaving them swinging violently on a hook nearby. It is an eleventh century building on the site of an eighth century site, which may have been a hospice for monks and pilgrims. According to the Guinness Book of Records, it is the oldest pub in England. This is despite challenges from the Bush, (Morwenstow, Cornwall), the Old Ferry Boat, (Holywell, Cambs) St Annes Castle, (Great Leighs, Essex) Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem (Nottingham) and Ye Olde Man and Scythe, (Bolton, Lancs).
