The Bell Inn
High Street, Thorpe Le Soken, Clacton-On-Sea, Essex, Clacton-on-Sea
A woman, who was married to two men at the same time, with living in separate houses, including the local vicar, lived nearby. Now she haunts this pub. Reports claim that when she died, comparatively young, both husbands were at the graveside, albeit unknown to one another. Her ghost would move heavy furniture about at the Bell Hotel, with seen to glide through the pub as a shadow that glows white. Witnesses felt a presence in a guest bedroom. Observers describe it as rather shadowy. It moves across the room to disappear through a closed door. In another guest-room, a heavy wardrobe has been moved during the night. It also appeared that the bed in one room had been slept in, although no one had been in there. It is the ghost of Kitty Chanham, the 18th century bigamist. In 2001, a fire raged through the Bell Hotel. However, this failed to burn a portrait of Kitty hanging on a wall.
