The Crown House Hotel
London Road, Great Chesterford, Uttlesford
With history from the 15th century, the elegant Crown House is one of the many historical buildings in Newport. In the 16th century, it was an inn called the King’s Head but later became the Crown Inn and then the Crown House. Legend has it that Nell Gwynne lodged here when meeting Charles II whilst he was staying at Audley End. The ghost of a previous proprietor is said to haunt the Crown House. However, he only appears from the waist down and wears a blue apron and buckled shoes.
