The oldest pub in Derby, it has history from 1350. The battered inn sign appears to have been erected at that time. A story, rife in the mid-1950s, was that the pub was haunted by a kilted man running through the bar with a woman on his back, to disappear. Now, the highlanders were in Derby in 1745, with one might well have stayed on as a ghost. The ghost wore an unusual kilt. However, more like a blanket wrapped around him. This fits in nicely with the description of the feilidh-mhor, Gaelic for large wrap. It is more usually called the Great Kilt, which was worn by highland warriors at that time. It is also haunted by the ghost of a young woman who was thought to be dead, with her body had been brought here by body snatchers. They had acquired it for a young doctor in lodgings here for his medical studies. As he was cutting her open, she suddenly screamed out; she was most probably in a catatonic state. She actually did die then from her wounds. He went mad. He was put away in a lunatic asylum, whilst the poor woman remains as a ghost heard screaming in the night at Ye Olde Dolphin.
