Ye Olde Gate Inn

Well St, Matlock, Derbyshire

During the English Civil War, in the mid-1600s, this people used as a military hospital. However, the merry little indwell here has only been around for 150 years. On one occasion, two men who had been drinking in the small bar came out, their faces ashen white, saying the place was haunted. They had even left their beer. They told the proprietor he should warn people about being in that room with ghosts and apparitions constantly manifesting. Being close to a church, toll or town gate was the usual reason for naming a pub ‘Gate’.
