A widespread name for a country pub and built on a rural joke that a horse going to the smithy would usually have only three shoes. It is a large, white painted pub with red trimmings and from the early Victorian period. In the early 1920s, a family of Romany gypsies took up residence in a field in the village. One of the girls went to the pub, probably to sell pegs, lace or lucky heather. However, there was uncovered water well in the yard and the gypsy girl fell into it. Although the proprietor and his wife heard her scream as she fell, they were unable to save her. The gypsy family put a curse on the well. However, it is not the pub or the family. Later this well was covered up and sealed. However, it set off a series of paranormal activity. Staff complained of being watched and there was poltergeist activity affecting the electrical equipment. On infrequent occasions, customers have seen a girl in a long dress glide through the bar. She vanishes into the road.
