An historic coaching inn dating back to 1584, the Swan exhibits ghostly manifestations. these include no less than five ghosts, with one of them is a cat. In the days of coach travel, the vehicles called here daily. The entrance was low with a steep slope, with there were several deaths caused over the years as people were crushed against the walls of the inn. One of these occurred in 1815, when news of Napoleon’s defeat was heard. A coach was being manually pushed out of the yard. A little girl ran out from a rear door. It was crushed beneath the wheels. She haunts the pub still, together with the cat and three men who had been killed in other coaching accidents at the Swan Inn.
