The Royal is a Grade II listed Regency structure built in 1826. A strange tale of a woman guest who never was has intrigued staff here for many years. A receptionist welcomed a woman to the Royal Hotel and escorted her to her room. She later found that no one had booked the room nor did the woman appear on the hotel registry. They searched the room but found no trace of the phantom woman having been there. A further inexplicable ghost regularly manifests in the dining room. No member of staff has ever observed him entering but he seen sitting at a table as though waiting to be served. There have been many reports of poltergeist activity in the cellars with beer barrels being rearranged and lights flickering.
