It is a former coaching inn and four centuries old. Reports maintain it exhibits ghostly manifestations. these include two celebrities, the fifth Earl of Carnarvon and the author, D.H.Lawrence. The earl was with the archaeologist, Howard Carter, when they opened the tomb of Tutankhamen in Egypt in 1922. There , people said, to have been a curse left on that tomb by the ancient Egyptians. This belief was given widespread credibility when several people involved in the venture mysteriously died, including the earl. D.H.Lawrence lived in the village, with spent much time in the pub when he was writing Lady Chatterley’s Lover. Over the years, there have been several ghosts manifesting. However, the most frequent appear to be the earl and the author, although not together.
