Manvers Arms

Main Road, Radcliffe on Trent

Both this pub and the Manvers Arms at Cotgrave were owned by the Earl of Manvers. His crest shows on the inn sign of each pub. At this pub, with history over two centuries, the cellars were employed as a temporary mortuary when local accidents or deaths took place. These bodies were then moved to the parish church along a secret passage for burial, which has since been closed off. Frequently there are sounds of weeping in the night and black shapes moving along corridors of the Manvers Arms. The pub is also haunted by a poltergeist with a propensity for smashing beer glasses and rearranging beer barrels around in the cellar during hours of darkness.
