A most attractive village pub with a stream running past, a fine stone built bridge, with Deeping St James has an 18th century village gaol. This goal is attractive. It is as elaborate as any other a lock-up in England is. It was constructed with the materials from a 15th century building. During the 17th and 18th centuries, a number of lock-ups were built throughout England as a place of detention for local rogues and miscreants. These men were held in these cells until they could be removed to a town for trial or execution. The legend is that two drunken men were imprisoned in this lock-up, with one killed the other in a fight while they were incarcerated. The killer himself was severely injured and died shortly afterwards. The bodies were taken to the Bell Inn for an inquest, with both still haunt the pub, with loud shouts and obscene language.
