Best Western Angel and Royal Hotel

High Street, Grantham

The Angel is one of the oldest inn signs to reflect the connection between religious establishments and traveller’s hostels. The land on which it stands originally belonged to the Knights Templar. In 1212, King John and nobles held court here. It was at this inn in 1483 where Richard III signed the death warrant for the Duke of Buckingham and Charles I stayed in 1633. The inn exhibits ghostly manifestations that include a White Lady. She has been witnessed and heard breathing heavily in the bedroom corridors of the second and third floors. In 1707, the then proprietor, Michael Solomon, left £2 a year to pay for preaching against drunkenness on Mayor-making Day in Grantham.
