The Square and Compass
Eastgate, Normanton-on-Trent, Normanton on Trent
This pub is over four centuries old and was previously known as the Freemasons’ Arms. The “square and compass” refers to basic tools used by carpenters, joiners and stonemasons. Some 300 years ago, a man failed to pay his bill by mistake and was arrested for fraud. Despite his vehement explanations, he was taken away and later hanged at Nottingham Gaol. However, he got his own back after his untimely demise at the end of a rope by reappearing as a ghost. He has remained ever since causing mayhem and disaster.
